Wave Regatta - the first event for three of the new Irish teams!

Along with Round 3 of the 31 Race Circuit this weekend brings us the first regatta for three of our new Irish teams joining the fleet.

Valkyrie, Aja and Adrenaline will all be on the start line at Wave Regatta in Howth. The teams have had a few weeks to get up to speeding are excited to get up to speed for the first time.

We spoke to the owner of Valkyrie, David Maguire to see what he had to say. "It’s been a while since Ireland had a major Regatta with both Cork week, the Wave and the Dun Laoghaire Regattas all cancelled during Covid. The Wave Regatta this weekend is hosted by Howth Yacht Club and is expected to draw 200 entries. For the first time in Ireland the Capes will be racing, with three entered for the event and racing in Class Zero. The Wright’s Adrenaline, Dan O’Grady’s Aja and Valkyrie will all complete for the first time. There is anticipation mounting amongst the rest of the IRC fleet to see the Capes on the race track."

"Three days of sailing in medium airs is expected with round the cans racing on the Friday and Sunday. Saturday being the coastal race of the Lambay Race where the fleet will race from Irelands Eye Island to Lambay Island and back to Howth Harbour. Mark Mills will be on the water to watch his design complete for the first time in home waters. It was in the Lambay Race 26 years ago that the Mills designed Aztec (a 31 CHS bandit) debuted and won and when on to win in Ireland and the Solent. This was the design that launched Marks career as a yacht designer."

The Class are very excited to have 5 Irish boats in the fleet now. Several of the Solent based teams are heading up to Cork Week in July to compete with the Irish teams before they come down and join the rest of the fleet for the final three rounds of the Race Circuit - Cowes Week, Royal Thames Invitational and the Cape 31 National Championships at the Royal Yacht Squadron at the end of September.
